RTE’s Ryan Tubridy was thrilled last night when Gay Byrne’s wife Kathleen Watkins shared what she misses most about her late husband.
Kathleen joined Ryan on the show last night as he graciously donated one of Gay’s infamous Toy Show sweaters in an attempt to raise money for homeless charities this winter.
The TV presenter asked Kathleen about the times she misses her beloved Gay Byrne the most.
He asked, “You said the other day that you went for a walk, are the times you miss him the most?”

Kathleen replied, “I think the times I miss him the most are just sitting in his chair. Just that, just the presence. Just sitting there reading with his papers and his books.
“He was always up to his neck in books, towards the end it was very difficult, his eyes were giving him trouble.
“You probably remember that, his fingers were numb so he couldn’t play the piano, and then his eyes were giving him trouble.”
Ryan was speechless when she offered him one of Gay’s much-loved Toy Show jumpers to raise money for homeless charities.
He made the gift after having recently walked through Dublin city center and seen the homeless problem first hand.
“It was really a surprise. I found homeless people everywhere, three and four people lying next to each other, huddled at the doors. It was really very distressing.
“We live in our comfortable houses with our comfortable beds and there are people who are really very bad, so I hope that maybe the sweater helps,” he said.
Initially left tongue-tied by the generous offer, Ryan promised that the cherished sweater would be used in “meaningful” ways to help the homeless.
In another part of the interview, Kathleen revealed that she had been hospitalized multiple times since her husband’s death, but now feels “fine.”
“I feel good. I have my moments, I have had some moments in the last month, but I am doing well just with the help of family and friends. They have been absolutely wonderful. I count my blessings all the time.”
