Six people have been rescued from the River Liffey after their ship ran into difficulties west of Dublin city center.

A group of junior rowers from the Commercial Rowing Club in Islandbridge were training on the river when they ran into difficulties around 9am.

Rescue swimmers and firefighters used ropes and a floating sled to reach the trapped group.

The Dublin Fire Brigade has thanked Trinity College Yacht Club for their assistance in the rescue effort.

Andrew Coleman, coach of the Trinity College yacht club, says the group was in good spirits after their lucky escape.

“They had a safety swimmer swim across the river, which provided a line and then helped the rowers up the dam.

“Then they could deploy their safety raft that brought them back to Trinity Pier.”

Meanwhile, four people on a yacht off Dublin’s south coast have been rescued.

They were having mechanical problems while anchored next to Hawks Cliff in Dalkey this afternoon.

The Irish Coast Guard alerted Dun Laoghaire RNLI to assist those aboard the 36-foot yacht.

His all-weather lifeboat was launched and arrived at the scene shortly after 2.30pm and towed the boat which was absorbing a lot of water.

They fixed the problem before reaching the port of Dun Laoghaire, where the extra water was drawn.

Nobody needed medical attention.
