Bohemians 3 Cork City 0
Cork City interim manager Colin Healy has challenged his players to start believing in themselves again after the loss to the Bohemians kept them at the end of the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division with just four games to play. .
With Neale Fenn leaving the club on Thursday morning, Healy has been put in charge for the remainder of the campaign but, although he made five changes to the starting lineup for the trip to Dalymount Park, the concession of two early goals left. City faced with an arduous task that they could not overcome.
They are still two points behind Finn Harps and are without a win in seven games. With Dundalk visiting Turner’s Cross on Tuesday night, Healy is looking to turn things around quickly.
“I know the players, I’ve worked with them,” he said, “they need to start believing in themselves.
“I think we have enough, but we have to get into training camp and work on some things. We’re only in one day, I did a few things and made a few changes, we knew it was going to be difficult, but listen, we’ll be back, we’ll train tomorrow, we’ll go over tonight’s. game and go from there.
“We have another great game against Dundalk on Tuesday.”
Healy added Jake O’Brien, Dale Holland, Ricardo Dinanga, Cory Galvin and Cian Bargary to what was a youth team, while Seán Kennedy and Henry Ochieng came off the bench. Although he was happy with the performance of the younger players, he regretted the cheap goals given away.
“I changed it,” he said, “but we did leak some silly goals. I thought that the young people who started did very well, they worked hard and pushed well. In the second half, they gave little glimpses of how good they are.
“But, if you give away stupid goals like that, no matter what level you are at, they will punish you.
“Make no mistake, they are a good side, I am not going to take anything from them. They have nice boys upstairs [Danny] Grant out wide is good, although I thought Uniss [Kargbo] He did very well against him in the second half, and it was always difficult to get here.
The victory guarantees Bohs a third place finish, and next week’s clash against Dundalk is critical as they look to secure second place. Keith Long’s team will be in high spirits after a great performance here.
In four minutes, Andre Wright, who was the winner of the match when the teams met at Turner’s Cross in August, had a deflected effort and from the resulting corner of Anto Breslin, former City player Dan Casey saw his header return the crossbar.
Bohs closed in again when another pitch from Breslin was volleyed by the cheerful Dawson Devoy and they took the lead in the 16th minute. Promise Omochere connected well with Conor Levingston on the right side and then slipped a beautiful pass to Wright, whose touch it took him past Joseph Olowu before stepping over Mark McNulty.
Four minutes later, the lead was doubled thanks to quick thinking from Bohs winger Danny Grant. When Levingston sent a ball from deep, Grant’s pace took him away from the City defense and when he saw McNulty off his line he sent a perfectly measured balloon into the net.
Just before half an hour, Grant had another good chance, but McNulty saved well and Olowu was able to clear the danger.
Having been under pressure for much of the game, City came close to returning to the game 11 minutes before half-time as Cory Galvin did well to engineer an opportunity before launching a shot from the edge of the penalty area. Ball cannon shots back on the bar.
In the early stages of the second half, City showed more effort and Cian Bargary had a shot that was easy for Talbot, while Dinanga’s long-range shot went wide. However, in the 53rd minute, Bohs scored a third goal, ending hopes of a City resurgence. Wright was the man to get it, his second of the game, getting up to head home with a cross from Devoy.
Healy featured Seán Kennedy for his league debut, while Henry Ochieng and Cian Murphy were also featured, but Bohs never seemed to allow his visitors to return to the game. A low shot from Gearóid Morrissey was his best chance, while McNulty had to save well to deny Bohs right-back Andy Lyons a fourth.
