Fines for breach of rules approved by the Cabinet

Gradual fines for those who violate the coronavirus measures will be introduced after being approved by the Cabinet Covid-19 subcommittee.

The Departments of Health and Justice will now draft a law to introduce a system of fines for those who violate regulations, such as not wearing masks or not complying with travel restrictions.

A spokeswoman for Justice Minister Helen McEntee said: “Cabinet agreed to legislate on gradual fines; further discussion will follow.”

It is understood that the group also examined the proposed EU traffic light system, which would place countries in the red, amber and green categories for travel, however the possibility of extending the midterm school break was not discussed in the meeting.

The Taoiseach had already marked a new graduated fine system and what it called a “more proportionate” system for those who do not comply with Covid rules.

However, speaking earlier this week, Micheál Martin said that he hopes people will comply.

“We want people to join in this effort, we want level 3 to work, level 4 and level 5 will have profound negative implications for society and our economy.” Mr. Martin said.

“We are very eager to work with people and achieve compliance without having to ultimately depend on those measures.”
