A pharmacist has been arrested as part of an investigation into allegations of defrauding the HSE through its pharmacies.
The man, who owns a successful business in the sector, is alleged to have claimed payments from the HSE to which he was not entitled by submitting the same payment claims more than once.
He was arrested in South Dublin under gardaí agreement on Wednesday and was brought about 30 counts of showing deception as gardaí charged him with the alleged crimes.
The pharmacist was released and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date. There is no indication that any allegations have been made against anyone else involved in the business.
Audit
The allegations were brought to the attention of the Garda after the results of an HSE audit were forwarded to it. The investigation has been ongoing for some time and the suspect was first arrested earlier this year.
He was released without charge at the time pending further investigations by members of the Garda National Office for Economic Crimes.
Since then, those investigations have continued and detectives with the bureau arranged a meeting with the man on Wednesday.
After being arrested by agreement and charged with the alleged crimes of deception, he was released. No wrongdoing determinations have yet been made against him, as the criminal charges he now faces remain just indictments.
