A Longford high school, Meán Scoil Mhuire, announced its closure due to a confirmed case of Covid-19.
Following confirmation from the HSE, a text message was sent to parents this afternoon confirming that “as a consequence it is not possible to keep the school open.”
All parents were asked to pick up their daughters from school as soon as possible.
Principal Aoife Mulrennan confirmed this afternoon that a member of the school community had tested positive for the virus, prompting a large number of staff members to isolate themselves.
“The Midlands Department of Public Health has carried out a full assessment of the public health risks. All children and staff who have been identified as close contacts have been reported. Testing is expected tomorrow.” He said.
“All close contacts were removed from the school immediately after receiving Public Health guidance. Public Health’s action to exclude all close contacts of Covid-19 from the school has caused a significant staff shortage, sadly one that did not we can overcome “.
To ensure the continuing education of the school’s students, classes are scheduled to continue online starting at 9 am tomorrow.
“The school has invested significantly in staff training around online delivery since the beginning of the school year. We believe we are in a positive position to deliver curriculum and support our students through this difficult time,” he said Mrs. Mulrennan.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with our students and teachers who are directly and indirectly affected by this news today. The school will reopen on 10/19/2020 in accordance with public health guidelines.”
