Four people arrested on allegations of intimidation of witnesses

GARDAÍ HAS arrested four people today on allegations of intimidation of witnesses during the capital murder trial of convicted Garda killer Aaron Brady.

Officers attached to the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation (GNBCI) have been investigating allegations of witness intimidation, perverting the course of justice, and illegal use of mobile phones in the prison setting, all related to the recent criminal trial. of the DPP against Aaron Brady.

The Gardaí detective attached to the Serious Crimes Review Team at the Garda National Criminal Investigation Bureau (GNBCI) arrested four people in connection with this investigation.

The four persons are currently detained under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Mountjoy, Ballymun, Bridewell and Raheny Garda stations, respectively, for the due investigation of the offenses in question.

Brady was convicted in August of the murder of Garda Detective Adrian Donohoe.

The capital murder trial took place in a context of intimidation and interference, and witnesses and their families were threatened and attacked via social media.

Molly Staunton, who said at trial that she heard Brady admit that he “shot a police officer,” received a death threat on Snapchat within hours of completing her testimony.

Throughout the trial, prosecuting attorney Brendan Grehan SC expressed concern about the impact of witness interference and intimidation and was concerned that the continued delays caused by the Covid-19 outbreak and lengthy legal discussion would give those Bullying efforts greater chance of success.

In all, five people who had given statements to gardaí either did not appear in court or told the prosecution that their original statements were inaccurate.

One spoke of being “petrified” after receiving information about the shooting.

Another potential witness, a friend of Aaron Brady, originally provided him with an alibi, but later recanted and later did not go to court.
