The latest figures from the Health Protection Surveillance Center (HPSC) show that Donegal remains the county with the highest incidence rate of 14 days per 100,000, at 312.12.

The county reported 497 new cases of Covid-19 during the period from September 23 to midnight on October 6.

The second highest county in terms of incidence rate is Monaghan with 257.4. There were 158 more new cases of the virus during that period.

Dublin has the third highest incidence rate at 171.4, but it also had the most new cases at 2,309.

In terms of the intra-county breakdown, Dublin North West accounted for the most new cases with 440, followed by Dublin North Central which accounted for 368 new cases.

Overall, in this 14-day period, 5,925 Covid-19 cases were reported, and the national incidence rate per 100,000 is now 124.43.

2,641 cases during this period were associated with hospitalization, while 3,395 cases were from close contact with confirmed cases.

1,471 cases were also associated with community transmission.

Both 15-24-year-olds and 25-34-year-olds accounted for more than 1,000 cases each, according to HPSC data. There were 1,480 cases among people 15 to 24 years old and 1,044 cases among people 24 to 34 years old.

Clusters

This comes as the HPSC recently reported 395 new groups of Covid-19 in private homes last week.

There were also 12 new groups linked to schools and 31 cases in meat plants, compared to just 15 the previous week.

Currently, there are also five nursing homes across the country with 20 or more Covid-19 cases.

Recently, 31 cases were reported in a nursing home in Laois, as well as in a nursing home in Donegal that reported 30 cases.

Concerns are being raised about re-entry of the disease into these settings, after nearly half of the disease-related deaths occurred in first-wave facilities.

According to the latest HPSC report, there are currently 31 open clusters in nursing homes.
