On-site fines for violating Covid rules ‘under review’ by government

Plans for fines of 50 euros in place for not wearing a mask are not imminent, but are under review, a government spokesman said.

Tanáiste Leo Varadkar was reported to have told a Fine Gael parliamentary party last night that ministers were preparing to impose the fines.

It was also reported that they were considering fines of € 200 for anyone caught traveling outside of their county.

However, Fine Gael Minister of State Patrick O’Donovan has said that the Tanaiste “did not say that no one was preparing to do anything.”

He said Leo Varadkar gave a review of the implementation of the ‘Level 3’ measures to party members.

A government spokesperson told the Irish Mirror that all options are under review, but that there are now no immediate plans to introduce a new penalty system.

He added: “The law already provides for fines of € 2,500 for non-compliance with some laws such as organizing a meeting or not wearing a mask on public transport.”

O’Donovan said she spoke with Justice Minister Helen McEntee last night about Level 3 policing restrictions.

He said that Ms. McEntee has an “open mind” to see what will happen after the three week period at Level 3, but it is also not true that fines would be introduced on the spot at that time.

Limerick TD told RTE’s Claire Byrne that Garda Commissioner Drew Harris said the policing model is about “encouraging and educating people” about their responsibilities to suppress the virus.
