Dangerous driver races from the Kerry border to the city before crashing in front of an armed support unit

A runaway driver dodged Gardai at the Cork-Kerry border before speeding into Cork City and crashing into a utility pole.

The incident began on the county line between Cork and Kerry one night earlier this week.

The car did not stop in the direction of Gardai and accelerated in the direction of the city.

A social media post from the South Gardai Region reveals that the car was later observed by the Garda Armed Support unit, driving dangerously at high speed upon reaching Cork City.

“The car didn’t stop again for Gardai before crashing into a lamppost at Ballincollig.”

“The driver was arrested by Gurranabraher Gardai on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, numerous charges of dangerous driving, disqualified driving, uninsured and, to top it off, they had an arrest warrant.”

The driver has been brought before the Cork District Court and will receive a series of citations.

Gardai has taken the opportunity to remind motorists in Munster that Operation Fanacht is already underway: there will be more than 130 checkpoints on major routes every day during the ongoing Level 3 restrictions.

These will be backed up by smaller rolling checkpoints on back roads through Cork. When these checkpoints were in place from April onwards, hundreds of traffic violations were detected in Cork.

And as Garda Commissioner Drew Harris has pointed out, it’s never a good idea to drive dangerously or while intoxicated, but with checkpoints across Ireland, it would be insane to do so now.
