Levels of restriction Ireland: extreme concerns Dubliners broke the rules and traveled over 350km for a big event while Gardai investigates

There is great concern that a group of Dubliners may have broken Level 3 restrictions in one weekend to travel more than 350km for a big event in Munster.

A Garda investigation has been launched to determine if Covid-19 travel restrictions were violated when a Rowing Ireland show took place off the Kerry coast at Portmagee, more than 220 miles from Dublin.

The National Coastal Rowing Championship took place in the Kingdom on September 26 and 27.

But eyebrows have been raised as it is fears that both competitors and fans have traveled from the capital and Donegal to attend, both of which were firmly bound by the Tier 3 rules at the time.

A Gardai spokesperson confirmed that they were trying to establish whether attendees of the coastal rowing event described as the “fastest growing sport in the world” had broken any rules.

He said: “Killarney Gardai is investigating a sporting event held in Portmagee, County Kerry, on Saturday the 26th and Sunday the 27th of September.

“Gardai is trying to establish if there was any violation of public health regulations.”

He added: “For eventual infractions to public health regulations, a file is prepared for the Director of the Public Ministry in each case.

The national travel advisory issued by Sport Ireland states that “competitors and officials may only travel from Level 3 areas to compete.”

It reads: “At certain Levels of the Plan, individuals will be advised to remain in their county or other defined geographic area apart from work, education, and other essential purposes, if applicable.

“Where Sport Activity is permitted, ie for professional sports, elite sports, inter-county sports, senior club championships, etc., participants and support staff may travel to fulfill these pre-existing accessories.

“You should not make trips for training or sports competition outside of these purposes.
