A 9-year-old girl from Dublin has been named the winner of Manchester City Football Club’s first ever t-shirt design contest.

Lucy Beth Duffy of Beaumont was one of 1,000 people from around the world who participated in the Premier League team team design competition, which launched last May.

Fans were asked to download a template and color in a design. Entries were then narrowed down to a short list of four, before Lucy Beth was crowned the winner.

For the competition, Puma produced a limited edition version of their jersey with their name on the back. He also received a shirt signed by player Sergio Agüero and a framed image of his entry.

An avid Manchester City supporter, Lucy Beth said she was “delighted” to have won the competition.

“I’ve been a City fan all my life. My first memory is that Man City started the game and scored a goal and the other team didn’t even touch the ball. Growing up in a house full of city fans is crazy, especially on game day, “he said in a video message after winning.

“My favorite player is Sergio Agüero because he scores a lot of goals.”

She decided to enter the contest because she loves to draw and color.

“As it was Man City, I thought it was perfect for me. I chose this design because they already had stripes and I thought I’d rather go for a pop of color. So I did the stripes on the inside. I had to keep them blue because Man City is blue, so I added pink for a pop of color. “

Speaking to The Irish Times, Lucy Beth’s mother, Martina, said it has been “crazy” since the news broke.

“The excitement in the house has been incredible. Everyone has been glued to their phones all day, between Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, and everyone is calling us. It has been really exciting, ”she said.

Ms. Duffy said that Lucy Beth completed the design during the lockdown and did not expect to win.

“I just printed it, like I did other things to keep her busy and when she took the photo, I took a photo, tweeted it and tagged Man City. A few weeks later, I received a message to tell her that she had been shortlisted and was one of the four finalists, ”she said.

“She is the youngest of five siblings. She has four older brothers. You’d think if someone were to make headlines in football, it would be one of the boys, not the girl in the family. “

The family are ardent Manchester City fans and Lucy Beth has traveled from Dublin for matches at the Etihad Stadium. Her first game there was when Manchester City defeated Watford in January 2018, and she returned for the team’s New Year’s Day victory over Everton in 2020.

“His grandfather has been a fan of the city since he was a child. He is the reason that almost everyone else in the house supports them. In this house, if you can’t beat them, join them. We have four kids, so when football games start, the house is in chaos, ”explained Ms. Duffy.

“If she had no interest, she would have stayed out. She had a passing interest and then about two years ago, after we took her to a game, she was really interested after that. “

Fans can win one of 20 limited edition jerseys through a competition on the club’s website.
