Independent TD Mattie McGrath apologized in the Dáil for comments he made about Medical Director (CMO) Dr. Tony Holohan.
Tipperary’s TD apologized to Dr. Holohan and his family following their comments questioning where the CMO had been in recent months.
He said “I want to deeply apologize if I caused any offense”, adding that “I want to apologize to his wife and family for any harm caused.”
McGrath had made the remarks at a press conference when he criticized the advice of the National Public Health Emergencies Team (NPHET) that restrictions to deal with Covid-19 should move from Level 2 to Level 5 according to the Government’s phased plan. to control the spread of the virus.
Mr. McGrath claimed that Dr. Holohan was “coming back as John Wayne with his six guns swinging ‘I’m going to shut down the whole country.’
Tipperary’s TD asked: “Were you with the World Health Organization (WHO) for the past few months listening to them, or where were you?”
NPHET was not chosen by anyone, he said, adding that “it is a terrible situation and people are fed up with it.”
The CMO had taken leave to care for his wife, who is receiving hospice care for terminal cancer.
Apologizing at the Dáil, Mr. McGrath said: “I made comments earlier about Dr. Holohan, asking where he has been for the past few months.
“I fully understand where you have been caring for your sick wife. I want to deeply apologize if I caused any offense. “
McGrath said his comments addressed the “furore” over NPHET’s recommendation Sunday to increase restrictions to Level 5.
He said, “I want to apologize to his wife and family for any harm caused.”
