At least 31 positive cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed in an infirmary in Co Laois.

The worrying results were obtained at Kilminchy Lodge Nursing Home in Portlaoise, which has 21 cases among residents and 10 more among staff.

All diagnosed residents have been isolating themselves in their rooms.

Management says they are working with HIQA and public health authorities to manage the outbreak.

All relatives of the confirmed cases have been notified.

A spokeswoman for the home said: “The Kilminchy Lodge Nursing Home, Portlaoise, Co. Laois is currently dealing with 31 confirmed cases of Covid-19. 21 of these cases relate to our residents and 10 to our staff.

“Since we had confirmed cases towards the end of last week, all members of the family were contacted and we were continuously updated.

“Last night (October 5) a family liaison officer was appointed at the nursing home and is collaborating with the families of the residents in the home.

“All families have been contacted directly by phone between last night and this morning and have been informed about the state of health, well-being and care of their family member.

“In accordance with public health protocols and guidelines, residents who have tested positive for the virus are isolated in their rooms. We cannot comment on the status of these cases, as they are matters related to personal health.

“Our Director of Nursing leads the nursing home care team and works closely with Public Health to ensure proper measures are in place to contain the virus.

“We would like to thank all of our staff for their dedication, selfless efforts, and tireless work.”

He added: “We would also like to acknowledge the tremendous support provided by our lead inspector at HIQA.

“Kilminchy Lodge Nursing Home remains fully operational, but is closed to visitors and non-essential visitors in accordance with Level 3 government restrictions.”
