The Republic of Ireland has been hit by a confirmed case of coronavirus in the camp just 48 hours before its Euro 2020 playoff in Slovakia, but the game will continue as planned.
A non-playing senior support staff member of the senior team tested positive and will not travel to Bratislava with the team this afternoon.
As a result, two more FAI staff have had to restrict their movements and will not fly to Slovakia either.
The positive test came to light on Sunday evening after routine Covid testing of all Ireland’s players, the management team and FAI staff before the game.
The FAI said today in a statement: “The COVID-19 protocols have already been implemented.
“Contact tracing has resulted in two additional staff members restricting their movements.
“All three members of the back room staff are asymptomatic and doing well.
“The two close contacts tested negative. All the players, the management team and other members of the backroom staff also tested negative. “
The FAI statement continued: “Public Health has been informed and I have written to the FAI confirming compliance with the public health councils and permission for the team, coaching staff and the rest of the back room team to travel to Slovakia this late”.
There is no immediate concern about the suspension of the game as, according to UEFA rules, “the match will proceed as scheduled as long as the team has at least 13 players available (including at least one goalkeeper)”.
