Ireland could see curfews under new ‘Level 6’, expert warns

Professor Sam McConkey warned that we could see curfews under a ‘Level 6’ lockdown.

This new drastic measure could lead to draconian curfews ordering people to stay locked in their homes after 10 p.m.

The medical expert was responding to criticism that NPHET has gone too far by recommending scaling our lockdown alert to level 5.

But Professor McConkey warned that it could be worse and that we could see crashes at “Level 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 …”.

And he argued that the restrictions we have here are not the strictest in Europe and that many other countries, such as the UK, face being locked in their homes after 10pm.

The respected professor told Pat Kenny in Newstalk: “They have curfews in the UK.

“Some people say we have the strictest restrictions in Europe, but I think there is a curfew in parts of the UK where after 10pm you are not allowed to go out.

“So it could be a ‘Level 6’.

“I know no one has talked about ‘Level 6’ yet and was probably even surprised to hear Sam talk about ‘Level 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, but curfews have certainly been used in other countries for this.”

Professor McConkey also said the latest increase has been slower to materialize than the March and April increase that led to the last national shutdown.

But he said the trajectory remains the same.

He said, “The frog in the simmering water is the best metaphor because it is simmering.

“So it’s not like the beginning of March when everyone saw the horrible images from northern Italy, and then Spain, and they said, ‘oh, this is terrible, we must do something.’

“It is not that catastrophically fast, it is happening much more gradually, but it is still going in the same direction.

“It continues to be more and more constant and gradual every week.

“So we have to take action and go back down.

“And I think we need a political vision to achieve it.”
