Sky Sports host David Jones was forced to apologize after Graeme Souness used a xenophobic stereotype to criticize Erik Lamela at Tottenham’s. 6-1 victory over Manchester United.
Anthony Martial was sent off when he raised his hands towards Erik Lamela, causing the Argentine to fall dramatically to the ground.
MAILBOX: ‘Harry Maguire sucks’ and more reaction
Souness was clearly irritated by Lamela’s theatricality and used a racist stereotype in criticizing the playmaker.
“If Martial goes, then Lamela has to go,” he said on Sky Sports. “He raises his hands, Martial throws a whip, it’s like a tickle on your chops and he falls.
“It’s pathetic. He is very Latin. If one goes, both have to go. It’s pathetic. Is this what the game in English is about? We Brits do it differently. I have played in a Latin country, I have worked in Latin countries, I know how they see the game.
“Lamela will sleep well tonight thinking that he has done a great job for his team. That’s not us. “
Sky Sports host Dave Jones was quick to apologize for Souness’s outburst, trying to defuse the controversy.
“Now I have to say before we go, early in the program we criticized Erik Lamela’s role in the expulsion of Anthony Martial from the Manchester United-Spurs game,” Jones said.
“We would like to apologize for any offense that was caused and the stereotypes of Latino culture.”
