Kennedy defeated by Babic in heavyweight contest

Niall Kennedy of Wexford lost his heavyweight competition to Alen Babic in Milton Keynes tonight.

The 35-year-old was stopped in the third round against the Croatian, who had previously won all four of his fights by knockout in two rounds.

Kennedy was met with an attack from the promising Babic, but he coped well with the barrage of blows he received from the first bell.

There were indications that the Garda, which has spent much of its career on the east coast of America, might annoy its opponent, returning a few heavy blows and landing relatively easily, particularly to the body.

However, a left hook in the second from Babic sent Kennedy to the canvas. Referee Ian John Lewis did not rule it out as a knockdown, although replays showed it was a clean hit.

It left Kennedy fatigued and struggling to hit back and at the start of the third he was brought down by a barrage of shots.

Gorey’s man got to his feet but faced further punishment from Babic and the referee stopped the match shortly after.

It means a second loss for Kennedy in as many fights after losing to Devin Vargas 14 months ago.
