Within minutes of Donald Trump’s arrival at Walter Reed Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, groups of his supporters began gathering at the hospital entrance.
They were present all weekend, carrying banners and flags. They saluted and cheered as passing cars honked their horns.
One woman carried a sign that read: “Forecast: Four More Years in the White House.”
Other posters simply say, “Get better soon.”
Similar tributes and cards had been left along with bouquets of flowers at the hospital doors.
At one point today, a group of supporters bowed their heads as a man prayed over a loudspeaker for the health of the United States president.
Ken Deibler was holding a large poster depicting Donald Trump as the action hero Rambo.
“I have faith that he is a strong warrior and that he will defeat the virus and end it quickly,” he said.
A woman carrying an American flag said she rejected criticism that Donald Trump had not taken the virus seriously.
“We don’t know when that bug came in. He could have had a mask and maybe he touched a surface and touched his eye. It’s unfortunate, but he’s human like us,” she said.
A man wearing a Donald Trump hat and mask said he was confident that the US president would be okay.
“He’s going to recover and frankly, to be a bit ironic, I thought he needed a break,” he said.
