NPHET has met tonight amid concerns about rising coronavirus numbers.
The meeting was chaired by the medical director, Dr. Tony Holohan, who has now returned to work.
The meeting raises the possibility of new restrictions for part or the whole country, after yesterday the highest number of new cases was registered since April.
On Saturday 613 new cases were registered, with another 364 reported today.
The latest figures have shown that the national incidence rate of COVID-19 per 100,000 inhabitants has increased to 107.98.
Starting this morning, there were 134 COVID-19 patients treated in Irish hospitals, with 22 confirmed cases in intensive care.
Any recommendation made by NPHET will likely be considered by the government tomorrow or Tuesday, depending on the urgency.
While NPHET has been meeting today, government sources say the cabinet is unlikely at this time to consider its recommendations tonight. The decision will be tomorrow or Tuesday depending on the urgency of the recommendation.
