Public health officials have gathered tonight to discuss concerns about the status of the Covid-19 outbreak here.
Medical director Dr. Tony Holohan chaired the meeting as the number of hospitalized patients with the disease has risen to a level never seen since its peak in April.
In the three days until last night, more than 1,500 new positive tests were reported in the Republic.
High levels of infection have been recorded in Dublin and Donegal, which are already at level three.
Large numbers of new cases have also been observed in Cork, Kildare, Limerick, Laois, Galway and Kerry in recent days.
NPHET will make recommendations on whether further restrictions are needed to try and stop the propagation.
The committee’s advice will be considered by the cabinet tomorrow.
Tonight 364 cases were confirmed in the republic, 31 of those in Donegal. While 462 were confirmed in Northern Ireland, 91 of which are in the Derry & Strabane District Council area.
