And despite a tough time of late, Mourinho believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has his former team on the right track to get back to the top.
“It is a team that is improving year after year,” said Mourinho Sky sports before Tottenham’s game against Manchester United on Sunday.
“The younger players are now older, now they have more experience. The players who have bought are quality players.
“Many of my players, important players for me in my time at United, are no longer important.
“They have changed teams. Players who worked with me, some of them are not even now selected or are on the bench, that is a great evolution in the team.
“They have this ambition and this responsibility to win titles that they haven’t achieved in a long time. The last one was the Europa League, so they have this motivation, this potential and they are a very good team.
“I think they will [win trophies]sooner or later they will. It is the direction they are going.
“Younger people are getting older, they are getting more experience. Young (Marcus) Rashford is still young but not a boy anymore. He is a mature player just to give you an example.
“The greats like (Nemanja) Matic, they are still there for the team, for the balance of the team, for the emotional balance of the team, so I think it’s an evolving club.
“They want to do it and of course in the Premier League nothing is easy for anyone but they have a historical responsibility to do it.”
