A man from North Belfast is believed to have died in Turkey.

Two friends he was traveling with are also believed to have fallen ill, Belfast Live reports.

The Irish government said it is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance to families.

A spokesman for the Republic of Ireland Department of Foreign Affairs told Belfast Live: “We are aware of the case and are providing consular assistance.”

Two of the men are believed to be traveling on an Irish passport, while the third is believed to be in the country on a UK passport.

A spokesman for the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office said they have not yet been contacted for help.

The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust is believed to be helping.

North Belfast Councilor Sinn Fein JJ Magee told Belfast Live: “The Ardoyne community is in shock as this tragic news leaks out tonight.

“Family friends don’t have much information. We hear that two young men are seriously ill and one has died.

“Our thoughts are with his family and we are here to help the family in any way we can during this terrible time.”

Belfast Deputy Mayor, SDLP Councilor Paul McCusker, said: “Disturbing and devastating news from Turkey about three local men from North Belfast.

“At this stage we know that one man has died and two others are critical.

“As a North Belfast community, all of our thoughts and prayers go out to all of you, including the families.”
