Injury concerns rise for Stephen Kenny ahead of Slovakia play-off

Ireland’s fate at Euro 2020 will be sealed if they fail to deliver a positive result in Slovakia next week, and Stephen Kenny will face the first real test of his tenure as Ireland coach.

Preparation for the accessory will hardly be ideal. The coach will have very little time to train his players before the game, and the team will fly to Bratislava on Tuesday.

If Kenny didn’t have enough headaches, he now faces a number of potential injury problems.

Central defender Darragh Lenihan was absent from the Blackburn Rovers team for the 0-0 draw against Cardiff City, and news soon emerged that a “minor knee problem” would keep him out of international service.

Lenihan was very likely to win his first international match since 2018 during the next few matches, which means that Meath’s man will be very disappointed that he misses it.

There could also be a problem with Captain Seamus Coleman.

The Everton man put up another excellent performance this afternoon during the win over Brighton, but was forced to retire with an apparent hamstring problem midway through the second half.

Many were calling for Coleman to be reintroduced into the starting lineup after Matt Doherty got the nod as a right back during games last month, but the decision could now be made out of Stephen Kenny’s hands.

There is no information yet on the severity of his injury, but a hamstring problem could put him on the sidelines with just a few days to recover.
