The race for the First Division title took another turn when City of Longford were defeated 6-2 at Bishopsgate by an inspired Galway United Saturday night
The hosts could have closed the gap with table leaders Bray Wanders to three points with a win and were 2-0 up in 33 minutes thanks to Rob Manley and Adam Evans. Then the wheels came off.
Mark Ludden recovered a minute before the break and scored again in the second half to level things out.
Enter Carlton Ubaezuonu, who overtook John Caulfield’s men in the 62nd minute, scored again four minutes later and completed his hat-trick with ten to go. Wilson Waweru sprang into action between Ubaezuonu’s second and third goals.
Last night Drogheda United were beaten 2-0 by Athlone Town at United Park, allowing Bray to jump to first place with three games to play.
In the other party of the night Cabinteely beat dramatically Cobh Ramblers 2-1 to level the points with Longford and keep his hopes of snatching second place alive.
Jack Connolly’s effort in the 21st minute gave the visitors the lead, but Cobh leveled six minutes later through Charlie Lyons.
It seemed that way it would end, but Kieran Marty Waters won it for Cabo with a fresh finish in the 94th minute from inside the area.
