A THIEF who left a half-eaten peach at his crime scene was jailed after police forensics were able to use it to obtain a DNA match.
Arran Burton, 27, broke into a home in Ashington, Northumberland, on October 9 of last year and grabbed a peach from the owner’s fruit bowl, before discarding half the sandwich at the crime scene.
He then served himself candy and chocolate before fleeing.
While scanning the home for evidence, officers found the partially eaten fruit and alerted the forensic team that they were able to obtain a DNA match for Burton.
After pleading guilty, Burton, of Castle Terrace, Ashington, appeared in Newcastle Crown Court for sentencing on Tuesday.

Now he will spend 876 days in prison.
Detective Sergeant Dave Boon of one of the Northumbria Police Robbery Teams praised the forensic specialists for their work that led to the arrest.

He said: “The forensic team’s DNA work on this case has been fantastic.
“Your meticulous efforts have helped convict a thief and have made the local community safer.
“His successful efforts mean that Arran Burton will now have a lot of free time to think about his actions.”
Burton was also ordered to pay a surcharge to the victim of £ 181.
