A MAN has appeared in court for the seizure of the largest sum of cash in the history of the State.
Darren Hoey is charged with handling € 3,694,845, allegedly the product of organized crime.
The multi-million euro seizure, resulting from a major Garda operation in Dublin, Laois and Kerry, is believed to be the largest cash seizure ever made by agents.
Hoey, 46, of Oak Drive, Ballacollig, Mountmellick, Co Laois was charged that, on September 30 in Farranstack, Lisselton, Co Kerry, he possessed cash worth 3 million euros, knowing it was product of the crime.
SECOND POSITION
The second charge was similar, but with an amount of € 694,845 and a different location at his home in Mountmellick.
Garda Detective William Brennan told Fermoy District Court that he arrested Hoey at the Tralee Garda station and charged him with the two crimes today.
UNANSWERED
Hoey did not respond to any of the charges. Defense attorney Kieran O’Keeffe told Judge Brian Sheridan that defense attorney Kieran O’Keeffe would not request bail.
He said there was no request for free legal aid.
Inspector Tony O’Sullivan asked Judge Sheridan to detain Hoey to appear in Tralee District Court next Wednesday.
Hoey was sent to Cork Prison until Wednesday, when he will be taken to Tralee.
The defendant, who was wearing a mask, did not speak during the brief hearing except to recognize his name.
