Stop horse feed while producer investigates contaminant

A major horse feed producer has advised customers not to feed their products to animals as they are investigating the presence of a prohibited substance in some of their products.

GAIN Equine Nutrition said that zilpaterol, a synthetic beta-agonist approved for use as a performance enhancer in some non-EU beef production systems, has been found in some of its equine feeding range.

The contaminants were found in products in France, as a result, food products in Ireland and the United Kingdom have also been tested.

GAIN Equine has insisted that the synthetic substance has never been part of any formulation in any of its animal nutrition ranges.

The company said that as soon as it became aware of the problem, its quality control team immediately began testing the food products and withheld the samples.

In a statement tonight, it says it is working closely with all appropriate agencies, including the Irish Department of Agriculture, to fully investigate the source of the contamination.

Martin Ryan, Director of GAIN Equine said: “We sincerely apologize to our valued customers for the inconvenience caused by this incident and we promise to keep them fully informed immediately.

“A comprehensive investigation and tracing of all food ingredient sources is underway as a matter of urgency to determine how this external contaminant may have gotten into some batches of our equine product.”
