Athlone City inflicted a great blow to Drogheda UnitedThe First Division title awaits with a surprising 2-0 victory at United Park.
Tim Clancy’s men were at the top of the table heading into this one, aware that four wins from their last four games would seal the league and send them back to the Premier Division.
However, Athlone broke the script when they came out of last place.
The stalemate was broken with 19 minutes to go when Taner Dogan was brought down in the area and Ronan Manning scored the resulting penalty.
In the 83rd minute, the jaws hit the ground as Dogan launched an incredible shot from inside the middle of the house that went over the goalkeeper’s head and into the net.
The result opened the door for Bray wanderers to go up and took the opportunity with both hands, defeating UCD 3-1 at Belfield.
Gary Shaw put them forward after just three minutes when he swept home a Dylan Barnett cross.
Colm Whelan leveled the score in the 42nd minute, but 17-year-old Darragh Lynch put the visitors ahead again three minutes into the second period and Barnett closed it with a free kick in the 61st minute.
Shamrock Rovers II, meanwhile he won, Wexford 2-0 thanks to two early goals at Ferrycarrig Park.
Brandon Kavanagh put them ahead in the fifth minute, and Dylan Duffy doubled his lead nine minutes later. The result sees Wexford fall to the bottom of the table.
