Armed Gardaí were called to the NUI Galway campus today after reports of someone in possession of a weapon.
Concerned students posted videos on Twitter, saying the Gardaí parked at the Goldcrest student accommodation and was heading towards the Corrib Village student accommodation, which is directly across from Goldcrest.
In a statement, the garda press office said: “Gardaí responded to a report of a possible firearm on a property in Upper Newcastle, Galway this afternoon, Friday 2 October.
“The Armed Support Unit went to the scene and conducted an exhaustive search of the premises. The search was negative.”
A spokesperson for NUIG’s Housing Office said the reports were a false alarm.
“Gardaí was called to our residences earlier today to attend to an incident that turned out to be a false alarm, if any resident has any concerns, they should contact reception,” the statement said.
