Gardai has closed more than 30 house parties near the University of Limerick since the weekend.

The closures came as part of an operation to stop the spread of the coronavirus by encouraging the public to adhere to social distancing guidelines.

Gardai told a meeting of the Joint Police Committee in Limerick that 35 games have closed since last Sunday.

More than 30 people attended each house party.

The parties took place in the Castletroy area, one of UL’s largest off-campus housing areas.

Since last Sunday, gardai has arrested five people for alleged crimes of public order and breaking and entering in the area.

They have also issued 70 on-site fines for illegal parking and ordinance violations related to the offense of drinking alcohol in a public place.

Gardai also issued behavior warnings to 30 people since last Sunday.
