A 12-year-old girl died in agony after years of being bitten by lice triggered a fatal heart attack, authorities believe.
The tragic Kaitlyn Yozviak died last month and now her parents are facing murder charges for shocking negligence.
According to the researchers, his death was caused by cardiac arrest as a result of severe anemia, which was likely caused by repeated bites, reports Mirror.co.uk.
Parents Joey Yozviak, 38, and Mary Katherine ‘Katie’ Horton, 37, were arrested after investigators ruled that Kaitlyn had experienced “excessive physical pain due to medical negligence.”
Special Agent Ryan Hilton of the Georgia Bureau of Investigations told WMAZ-TV that he discovered “the most severe lice infestation” his office had ever discovered.
The young woman had not bathed for a week before she was killed and was forced to live in a dirty room with vermin swarming on her mattress, stuffed animals and furniture.
According to reports in the United States, Kaitlyn had not bathed for a week and was living in a dirty room surrounded by vermin.
He had not been to school since February, police said.
Authorities were called to the reports of a boy who did not respond on August 27.
Ivey Police Chief Untimothy Roby told reporters: “I was shocked when I saw her lying there, so it was hard for me to know that the girl was not responding.”
Kaitlyn is alleged to have been put up for adoption after her birth in 2008, but mom and dad changed their minds at the last minute.
Michele Creamer, who was due to adopt the baby, told First Coast News: “They felt like they couldn’t keep her.”
But on the day he was supposed to pick up Kaitlyn and take her home, Horton told her that he had changed his mind.
Michele said: “She looked at me that day and said, ‘This baby is supposed to be yours.
“This baby is supposed to be yours. I don’t want this baby, but I feel like I have to.”
The girl’s older siblings had previously been removed from the home due to dire conditions, ABC13 reports.
Both parents have been charged with second degree murder and second degree child cruelty.
