Dublin star Diarmuid Connolly has retired from inter-county football.

The St. Vincent man retires with six All-Irelands, ten Leinster titles, four National Football Leagues and two All-Stars.

He made his debut in 2007, establishing himself as one of the best forwards of his generation.

Connolly took a year off in 2018 and spent the summer in the United States, where he moved to Donegal Boston. She returned to the Sky Blues fold 17 months later, in July 2019, and played a key role from the bench when the Dubs defeated Kerry in the repeat final to seal the five in a row.

“I have made the decision to withdraw from the Dublin GAA representation at the inter-county level,” the 33-year-old said in a statement.

“I have been fortunate to play with an incredible group of players and have treasured memories for life.

“Throughout my trip to Dublin, I was fortunate to have shared it with an exceptional collection of friends who demonstrated unwavering support and loyalty to me throughout my time.

“I would like to thank my club, the GAA St Vincent and the Dublin County Board for giving me the opportunity to represent Dublin from the junior level to the top.

“There was always a strong relationship between the county board, the teams and the players and this had a notable influence on our performance.

“I would like to express my undying thanks to the incredibly loyal, passionate and devoted Dublin fans who were always there for us, regardless of score. They will always hold a special place in my heart.

“Thanks for the memories.”
