Storm Alex has been appointed by the French Met Office, although it is not expected to bring major weather conditions to Ireland.
The storm is expected to have a much worse effect on continental Europe, as Ireland is experiencing some wet and windy conditions.
Strong winds will hit France and parts of southern England on Thursday night, but will mostly pass here.
Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather said: “The French Met Service has appointed Storm Alex for tomorrow night.
“It will bring strong and damaging winds to France, but it will also affect the south of England.”
Eireann’s forecast for Ireland for the remainder of the week is for miserable conditions but not a storm warning level.
One forecaster said: “Thursday will bring a mix of sunshine and rain. A sunny and cold start in the east will soon give way to showers that will spread from the west in the morning and become widespread for a while.
“Many of the rains will be heavy with hail and isolated thunderstorms are possible. Light breezes from the south will turn westerly or variable in the afternoon.
“Quite cool for the time of year, with highs just 10 to 12 degrees.
“On Thursday night, showers will be confined mainly to the east and north with prolonged periods and clear elsewhere. Lows of 2 to 6 degrees with some frost possible. Winds will be light to moderate, heading north.” .
Friday and most of Saturday will be very similar before wetter and windier weather hits Saturday night and Sunday.
