A gang specializing in ripping off seniors out of exorbitant bills for shoddy or non-existent roofing and sewer work has been targeted by the Bureau of Criminal Assets.
The CAB froze nearly € 140,000 in three separate bank accounts linked to a Kildare-based gang and seized € 3,500 in cash.
It contributes almost € 110,000 in cash denied to the leaders of this group, with the previous seizure of cash carried out by the local gardaí more than two years ago.
In today’s transaction, the office searched four homes and one business location in the Newbridge area of Co. Kildare.
A father and son are the main targets of the operation. The four houses raided belong to people related to each other.
The CAB was backed by armed Gardaí, local detectives and Customs sniffer dogs.
A CAB statement read: “The Criminal Assets Bureau conducted a search operation in Newbridge, Co. Kildare. Four residential addresses and one professional premises were registered.
“The search operation was conducted by personnel from the Bureau of Criminal Assets assisted by the ASU, the Kildare Divisional Detective Units and the Customs Dog Unit.”
He said that as part of the operation the following articles of note were seized:
• Funds totaling € 138,511 were restricted in three separate bank accounts;
• € 3,500 in cash
The CAB statement read: “The search operation focused on assets linked to a gang involved in the installation of gutters and roof repairs mainly in the greater Dublin area.
“Affected people target the vulnerable and the elderly. Today marks a significant advance in the ongoing investigation of the Office of Criminal Assets. ”
It said a previous search targeting this gang had resulted in the seizure of € 103,852 in cash.
The operation was carried out by a local gardaí attached to Naas in July 2018.
It is understood that this network has been conducting its trade in the wider Dublin area for years.
This gang is one of several family networks operating across the country that scam people in connection with restoring fake properties.
A team CAB has targeted in recent years is believed to have made millions from their scams. In a major search operation in Kerry, the bureau seized a stolen caravan and nine vehicles.
They included two BMW X5s, three 5-series BMWs, a Mercedes, an Audi A4 and a high-end VW Passat, valued at around € 500,000.
Agents also seized jewelry worth up to 100,000 euros, including Rolex and Cartier watches.
In that operation, officers said the gang, based on two families, connected through marriage, targeted people who were vulnerable to intimidation and handed them the cash they were required to do, often before it took place. any job.
