There is a 15-hour yellow status weather warning, as heavy rain and flooding will arrive tonight.
The alert is in effect from 9pm tonight to noon Wednesday for Wexford, Wicklow, Galway, Mayo, Cork, Kerry and Waterford.
It says: “Heavy and sometimes heavy rains are expected totaling 25-40mm. This can result in localized flooding. The rain will clear western counties early Wednesday morning.”
There will be some sunny periods in many areas today, however the rain will move from the Atlantic further ahead, before the heavy rains arrive tonight and tomorrow.
A forecaster from Met Eireann said: “Any fog and patches of fog will soon clear to give a bright start today, with sunny periods. Some scattered showers will continue, mainly in the western and northwestern coastal areas. Clouds will increase from the west during daytime, with rain spreading from the Atlantic during the afternoon and evening. Moderate to cool southerly winds will become strong and gusty near the Atlantic shores in the evening. Higher temperatures 13 to 15 degrees.
“Humid and windy overnight. The rains in the west and southwest will become intense and persistent, and will spread throughout the country overnight, with the possibility of spot flooding. A clear space for the rains moves to the west at dawn, the lowest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees, to the cool and gusty southerly winds, strong to near gales on the coasts, will drift to the west.
“A rainy and stormy day will begin tomorrow in the central and eastern region, with heavy rains for a time and a continuing risk of flooding.
“Brighter and sunnier conditions with scattered rains in the west will gradually spread to all areas during the day. Higher temperatures 12 to 15 degrees. Moderate to cool and gusty south winds in the east, strong or near gales on the coasts at first, it will drift west in the morning and gradually moderate. “
And there will be more rain for the rest of the week, and some stormy on Thursday.
One forecaster added: “Widespread showers for a time on Thursday, some of the heavy and possibly stormy rain with hail. There will also be sunny periods. Light breezes from the south drifting west. Cool, with temperatures higher only 10 to 12 degrees.
“Another cool day with a mixture of sparkles and scattered showers, with the most frequent showers in the east of the country. Higher temperatures of 9 to 11 degrees, with moderate to cool north winds.
“Current indications suggest that it will remain cool and unstable over the weekend with rains or longer periods of rain, becoming intense at times. There is also the possibility of strong winds on Sunday, particularly in the west and northwest.”
