The ninth and potentially decisive round of future negotiations on relations between the EU and the United Kingdom begins today in Brussels.
It is the last full round of negotiations scheduled before the October 15-16 European Council, which UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has set as the deadline for reaching an agreement.
The EU says negotiators should seal a deal in late October or early November, to allow time for the European Parliament and some national parliaments to ratify it, so that an agreement can take effect from 2021, when it ends. Britain’s post-Brexit transition.
There remains a deadlock on key issues: a level playing field, state aid, governance (how conflicts are resolved), police and judicial cooperation and fisheries.
The two main negotiators, Michel Barnier from the EU and David Frost from the UK, will meet on Friday morning.

Meanwhile, Westminster MPs will debate today the controversial Internal Market Bill, which would allow the UK to void parts of the Withdrawal Agreement.
Tomorrow is the deadline set by the European Commission for London to withdraw the offending elements of the bill. There are no signs that it is likely to happen.
