Foreign Minister Simon Coveney will visit Washington DC today and tomorrow for a series of meetings, and Brexit is likely to dominate the agenda.
Today, Coveney will travel to the White House to meet with US National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien.
He will also hold talks with the United States Under Secretary of State, Stephen Biegun, of the United States Department of State.
Mr. Coveney will address a series of virtual events on topics such as Ireland’s upcoming membership of the UN Security Council and the 175th anniversary of anti-slavery activist Frederick Douglass’s visit to Ireland.
Tomorrow, Mr. Coveney will travel to Capitol Hill where he will meet with senior members of the United States Congress, including Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, and Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, Richard Neal. .
Earlier this month, UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab visited Washington and was warned by Pelosi and other high-ranking Democrats that there will be no US-UK trade deal if Brexit threatens the process of Peace of Northern Ireland.
Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has said that the Good Friday Agreement cannot be allowed to become a victim of Brexit.

Before leaving Dublin, Simon Coveney met with the United States’ special envoy to Northern Ireland, Mick Mulvaney, who is on his first visit to Ireland as an envoy.
