Peter Crouch is backing Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes for the Premier League Golden Boot gong this season due to the number of penalties they receive.

Man Utd depended on a Fernandes penalty on the last gasp to snatch a 3-2 win at Brighton on Saturday, which followed the shock of last weekend 3-1 home loss to Crystal Palace in the opening match of the club’s Premier League of the new season.

Fernandes confidently dispatched the penalty in the 10th minute of added time. Referee Chris Kavanagh had initially blown the whistle full time before checking the court monitor and penalizing Neal Maupay for handball.

Referees gave Man Utd a record 14 penalties in the 2019/20 campaign and Fernandes dispatched six of them in the second half of last season.

“I have supported Bruno Fernandes to win the Golden Boot and have done so on the basis that I will hear ‘Manchester United penalty’ once a week from now until May,” Crouch wrote in the Daily mail.

“There are 38 games, so I say 38 penalties. Do you agree?

“The penalty shot they got in Brighton on Saturday seemed absolutely extraordinary to me.

“I’m not sure how I would have felt to be on a team that thought they had a point on the final whistle, but then saw VAR come into play when they were shaking hands after the game. How does it work!”
