Nearly 100 Leaving Cert students had six or more of their teacher’s estimated grades under the Department of Education’s grading process, new figures show.
The extent to which some students were disproportionately demoted has prompted calls from Fine Gael’s TD, Jennifer Carroll MacNeill, calling for “compassionate” measures for affected students.
A new breakdown of the calculated grade figures shows that overall, 34 percent of the 60,000 Leaving Cert students this year did not have any of the poor grades from their teachers.
However, 32% (18,584) had one of their teachers’ grades lowered, while 20% (11,663) had two grades lowered and 9% (5,288) had three grades lowered.
Another 3% (1,885) had four of their grades lowered, 1% (488) had five of their grades lowered, and 0.1% (83) had six grades lowered.
A total of 11 students had seven or more subjects cut.
Ms. Carroll MacNeill said she had been contacted by numerous students who were distressed after several of their teachers’ estimated grades were lowered after the standardization process.
“The CAO notes that the implications of this were enormous for affected students,” he said.
“I have been contacted by students who missed their chosen courses or did not receive an offer from the CAO after being demoted in various subjects.
“Yes. The numbers are small in the general context of more than 50,000 students, but it has been very painful for these students and their families.”
She said she hoped that some compassionate steps could finally be taken to help these students.
Meanwhile, applications to take the 2020 completion certificate in November will open this morning.
The registration process can be accessed from 9:00 a.m. M. Through the Student Portal of calculated grades and those who intend to take the exams have until 5:00 p. M. From Friday to apply.
Subject to public health advice, testing will begin on Monday, November 16 and conclude on Friday, December 11.
One exam will take place in the afternoons from Monday to Friday from 5.30 pm and two on Saturdays and Sundays from 9.30 am to 2.00 pm.
For those who are not satisfied with the scores calculated above, anyone who takes the exams will receive the highest score from both processes. Written test results are expected in early February.
Those who choose to sit for the exams and continue to receive an enhanced CAO offer by foot of results will also receive a deferred college offer and can begin their course in the 2021/22 academic year.
The State Examination Commission (SEC) said that in a situation where a candidate who has already started the first year of a course is entitled to a higher CAO offer and chooses to accept it, attendance during their first year in the new course You will remain eligible for free SUSI fees and financing where applicable.
Candidates are expected to take their exams at the school where they entered last June and anyone who cannot attend them will be able to apply in 2021.
There are a few other key differences in the 2020 approach. The SEC noted that it would “not be feasible or practical at this stage” to do oral or practical components, or to attempt to complete the courses without finishing.
However, in the case of five subjects – practical home economics courses; LCVP portfolio; Practical courses in communication design and graphics; Project of Physical Activity in Physical Education (PE); and Engineering Internships – Courses that were completed prior to school closing will be marked and included in the grade.
The published times for the exams will be available on the SEC’s website (examinations.ie) when the student portal opens on Monday.
