Leeds have launched a move for Norwich’s Todd Cantwell and the clubs are in talks on a deal for England’s Under-21 international.
A £ 15 million fee has been widely reported but no deal has been reached and the midfielder has yet to agree on personal terms at Elland Road.
Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa declined to confirm the approach. Speaking after his team’s win over Sheffield United, Bielsa told BT Sport: “We only like to talk about transfers when they actually happen because a lot can happen during these moments. So I don’t like to talk about signings until they are confirmed ”.
The Argentine believed Leeds to be a worthy winner after growing in the match and improving in the second half to win their second game in a row and continue their strong start to the season:
“We could have gone ahead or behind at halftime, but in the second half we were better and we dominated a little more, more opportunities, and I think the result in the end was fair. I am satisfied with the defensive performance of the team. In the first two games we didn’t defend so badly that we conceded seven goals and not conceding in this game is a step forward ”.
Cantwell was left out of the Norwich squad for his Sky Bet Championship trip to Bournemouth on Sunday.
Leeds have already spent a record £ 30 million on striker Rodrigo de Valencia and signed defender Diego Llorente from Real Sociedad for a total of £ 17 million, after losing Josko Gvardiol to RB Leipzig.
The Norfolk-born Cantwell has been through the club’s academy and has scored eight goals in 70 appearances.
The 22-year-old impressed last season despite the Canarias finishing last in the Premier League, scoring six goals in 37 games.
Cantwell is expected to be the Canaries’ last major outing in this window, unless there is a big offer for one of their stars.
Norwich sold Jamal Lewis for an initial £ 15 million to Newcastle earlier this month. Emi Buendia, who was eager to return to the Premier League, will now likely stay on Carrow Road if Cantwell completes his move.
Max Aarons has been wanted by Barcelona, while Roma and AC Milan have also been linked with the right-back and defender Ben Godfrey could still stay.
Forward Teemu Pukki is expected to remain at Carrow Road despite having Wolves, Leeds, Sheffield United, Aston Villa and West Brom interested this summer.
