A Donegal hotel has apologized after a € 2 per room promotion went wrong.

The Beach Hotel in Downings announced their rooms for this weekend at a bargain price before they planned to close tomorrow.

However, the promotion was criticized by members of the public.

Among them was Donegal Agriculture Minister Charlie McConalogue, who said “It is totally unacceptable.”

The hotel has now apologized for any “unintentional offense caused by our local offer issued yesterday on Facebook.”

The management explained that the offer was only intended for the local population.

They explained: “Our intention was for no one to use the rooms; it was simply a method of allowing customers to become residents for a maximum period of 1 hour and 45 minutes in accordance with government regulations, so that they could take advantage of our food and drinks. indoor services.

“The government guide allows only residents inside and up to 15 non-residents outside to be served. The offer was based on our interpretation of this guide.

“The offer was a way to stay in business so that we could recoup our costs from the ordered stock for the full house of residents who canceled on Friday night.”

The hotel said it also allowed them to keep their staff employed and we believe this has highlighted the current stresses facing the hotel industry in Ireland.

They added: “Although it was never our intention to offend, we like that the other hotels, bars and restaurants in Donegal were in an impossible position.

“The government told us that we could stay open, but then they told us that we operate under such strict restrictions that it was not feasible to keep our doors open. The health and safety of our guests, employees and community are of the utmost importance to us.

“Since the reopening, we have strictly followed official protocol regarding hygiene, social distancing rules and the collection of contact tracing information.”
