UCC students seek accommodation refunds as classes are online for two weeks

Cork students want their money back after prepaying for accommodation this semester.

Earlier this week, the government ordered universities to begin the new semester with online classes for the next two weeks only.

But the UCC Student Union says many students have already made arrangements to appear in person, and some have already paid thousands of euros in advance.

UCC SU President Naoise Crowley fears a great deal of money has been wasted. “The first two weeks of school will be online, but we don’t know if that means two weeks or more.”

“Now we have a situation for students where they don’t know if they should leave their accommodation now, they don’t know if they will be there for a day or a week or less.”

“People have paid three or four thousand euros in advance and are in a situation where they may not need to use that accommodation.”

Eimear Curtain, Education Officer for the Student Union, said the late notification of those changes has added to the “already extreme uncertainty” surrounding the return of students to college.

“It is not an ideal learning environment,” he said.
