People in cities have been told to reduce their social contacts if they want to avoid further restrictions.

NPHET is examining measures for the cities of Cork, Waterford, Limerick, and Galway that may be different from the rest of their counties.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin says they are seeing a trend in large urban areas:

“In places like Cork City it has been going up in a straight line for the last two weeks. It is worrying with between 20 and 30 cases a day.

“That is a worrying trend and it is the same in other areas of the city. We are signaling that and making it very clear to people that they are areas of danger at this time.

It comes when the Department of Health confirmed another 326 new cases of Covid-19 tonight.

It was also announced that there were no new deaths from the virus.

There are now a total of 34,315 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ireland.

The total number of deaths related to Covid-19 remains at 1,797. There are also currently 16 people in ICU with the virus and another 94 in the hospital.

The department said that of the cases notified today: 162 are men and 152 are women, most of the cases (69 percent) are under 45 years old, 33 percent are confirmed to be associated with outbreaks or are close contacts of a confirmed case

They also said that 49 cases have been identified as community transmission.

Social network

Speaking tonight, Dr. Ronan Glynn, Acting Medical Director, said:

“Today I ask people everywhere, but particularly in Donegal and Dublin, to pay special attention to public health councils.

“I ask each individual to take personal responsibility for prioritizing who they need to see, limiting the size of their social network, and reducing their social contacts in the days and weeks ahead.

“Because while there is the possibility that other areas will have to go to level 3, there is nothing inevitable about it. We’ve seen before how people working together can turn the tide of this virus and get back in control of the growing trajectories.

Know how valuable your individual shares are. Your choices and your actions are part of how we will get there. ”

Last night three deaths and 324 additional cases of Covid-19 were confirmed.
