A London policeman died after a man in custody shot him at a police station.
Metropolitan Police said the officer died in hospital after the man shot him at the Croydon Custody Center in south London in the early hours of this morning.
A 23-year-old man detained at the scene was also taken to hospital with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and remains in critical condition, police said.
The force said no police firearms were fired during the incident.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson tweeted his condolences upon hearing reports of the death.
My condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the police officer who was killed in Croydon last night.
We owe a huge debt to those who risk their own lives to keep us safe.

In a statement, Scotland Yard said: “At approximately 02:15 on Friday 25 September, a man who was detained at the Croydon Custody Center on Windmill Lane fired at the officer.
“Officers and paramedics treated him on the spot and the London Ambulance Service took him to hospital. Very tragically, he subsequently died in hospital.
“We are in the process of informing the entire family of the officer and we are supporting them with specialist officers.
“A 23-year-old man was detained by officers at the scene. He was also taken to hospital with a gunshot wound and remains in critical condition.
“No police firearms were fired during the incident.”
