Dr Ronan Glynn has said that there is a “great possibility” of a coronavirus vaccine or type of rapid test that could help Ireland in 2021.

The acting medical director said that while we could be living with the Covid-19 virus for years, there is still reason to be optimistic.

Dr. Glynn said there is a “great possibility that the development of a vaccine in the next few months” means that next year things could change.

He added that there is a “great possibility that rapid tests” will be available at some point.

Dr. Glynn said that if we can get through this winter and spring, the world is likely to “find additional tools to help us live with this.”

The health expert spoke at the Wednesday night health conference where 234 more cases and two more deaths were announced.

And as Donegal, Waterford, and Louth approach level three restrictions, the medic begs the public to cut back on their contacts.

The Acting CMO said: “The most important thing that people across the country must do now is reduce their social contacts. We must all reduce discretionary social activities.

“Knowing fewer people means fewer opportunities for the virus to spread. Please prioritize who you want to meet with and try to keep your social network as small as possible.”

Professor Philip Nolan also added that the next 10 days will be vital in the battle against the disease.

Professor Philip Nolan, Chairman of NPHET’s Irish Epidemiological Modeling Advisory Group, said: “While the 14-day incidence and daily incidence have stopped increasing in recent days, it is too early to conclude that there has been any change in the disease pattern.

“The number of reproduction in the last two weeks is still high, between 1.5 and 1.7, growth rate between 5 and 6.1 and the doubling time between 12 and 14 days.

“If we are starting to suppress the virus again, it is essential that we continue this effort: limit our social contacts, limit the mixing between households. The next ten days are critical.”
