The elderly man who died in an accident on Charleville’s main street had moved to the city in recent years.
The man was 80 years old and was hit by a truck while crossing the street at a busy intersection.
He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was later transferred for a post-mortem examination.
The truck driver was unhurt.
The road was closed for several hours to allow a forensic investigation of the scene.
Local Cork County Councilor Ian Doyle said: “It is very tragic.
This is the second such accident of its kind in about ten years. “
The accident is the third fatal in Cork this month.
A woman in her 60s was killed in an accident at Baxter’s Bridge, between Bandon and Enniskeane, on September 9.
On the same date, a motorcyclist in his 30s was killed when he collided with a pickup truck between Glantane and Dromahane.
Sixteen people have died on the roads of Cork so far this year.
Meanwhile, two people were taken to hospital this afternoon after a single car accident in Coppeen, near Enniskeane.
One person was taken by the Irish Community Rapid Response Air Ambulance, while another was taken to hospital by the National Ambulance Service.
The Gardaí investigating the Charleville accident is asking anyone who witnessed the collision, or any road user who may have camera footage (including the dash cam) to contact the Charleville Garda station on 063 21770 , the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
