A Co Kerry teenager appeared in court charged with harassing former Arsenal and England player Ian Wright earlier this year.
Patrick O’Brien (18) of Sycamore Court, Ashleigh Downs, Tralee faces two charges in connection with the incident last May. On Wednesday she was before a session of the Tralee District Court accompanied by her mother.
It is alleged that on May 11, 2020, at an unknown location in the Tralee area, Mr. O’Brien harassed Ian Wright, contrary to Section 10.1 and 6 of the Non-Fatal Crimes Against Person Act Act. 1997.
O’Brien also faces a second charge for the same date and location. It is alleged that he sent her a message by telephone that was extremely offensive, obscene and threatening, contrary to Section 13.1 (a) and Section 13.2 of the Postal Act of 1951, as amended by Section 4 of the Communications Act of 2007 .
Garda Sgt Eoin O’Donovan told Judge David Waters that he arrested O’Brien Wednesday morning in Ashe Street, Tralee. The defendant did not respond to being charged.
The Director of the Public Ministry has ordered that the case can be treated summarily, that is, in the District Court, if there is a guilty plea, the court was told.
Attorney Patrick Mann, representing the teenager, requested the release of material on the matter. Gardaí did not object to the bail, the court heard.
Judge Waters ordered O’Brien to remain on bail and ordered him to reappear on November 18, when the question of jurisdiction will be decided.
