The virus spreads ‘disproportionately’ among the very young

Dr. Ronan Glynn, Acting Medical Director, warned that Covid-19 is spreading disproportionately among young people.

Dr. Glynn’s comments come after 334 new cases of the virus were confirmed yesterday. No further deaths related to the virus were reported.

As the number of new Covid-19 cases continues to rise, Dr. Glynn specifically called on adolescents and people in their 20s and 30s to adhere to public health guidelines.

He said that in the past two months, people between the ages of 15 and 34 have accounted for 40% of cases, describing this as a disproportionate spread.

Dr. Glynn said the proportion of cases in younger people was not surprising.

“They are more likely to move into the community, go to school, higher education or work, and keep our economy and key services running,” he said.

“For teens and people in their 20s and 30s in particular, I know that what has been asked of them and is being asked again is extraordinary.

“This pandemic has affected their education, their employment, their relationships and their social life. The vast majority have done the right thing: they have listened to public health advice and kept themselves and their families safe.”
