Coronavirus Ireland: Fears that more than 70% of new cases affect one age group

Ireland’s top doctor has issued a new warning, as COVID-19 has been hitting a particular age group.

The latest figure shows that a total of 72% of the new cases were people under 45 years of age.

Dr. Ronan Glynn warned that the virus “continues to spread disproportionately among younger people.”

The Acting Medical Director said: “Despite representing only a quarter of the population, people aged 15 to 34 account for 40% of COVID-19 cases in the past two months.

“This is not surprising since they are more likely to move into the community, go to school, higher education or work, and keep our economy and key services running.”

He added: “For teenagers and people in their 20s and 30s in particular, I know that what has been asked of them and is being asked again is extraordinary. This pandemic has affected their education, employment, relationships, and social life.

“The vast majority have done the right thing: they have heeded public health councils and kept themselves and their families safe.”

“But the disease continues to spread disproportionately among young people today. So I ask you to stick to this and follow the public health advice. “

He went on to ask them to be role models for others.
